Everything you need to know about Altrincham’s Christmas Lights Switch-on

11 Nov 2019

The annual Christmas Lights Switch-on, one of the biggest events in Altrincham’s calendar, will take place this Saturday in Stamford Square.

The afternoon build-up will see local school & community choirs, dances troupes & theatre groups take to the Stamford Square stage from midday.  Choirs taking part include, Altrincham CofE Primary School, Blessed Thomas Holford School, Bowdon Prep School, Wellington School, Park Road Academy Primary School and the Music Place.  Also taking to the stage will be the Youth Section from Sale & Altrincham Musical Theatre who will be singing songs from Nativity and Matilda, and pupils from Cardwells Theatre School.

Then from 4.20pm Hits Radio’s Mike Toolan will present a star-studded Christmas Lights Switch-on show full of family fun and entertainment.  Lemar will headline this year, and the show will also feature CBeebies’ Katy Ashworth and the Little Belters Choir.

Saturday will also see the first of five “pop-up Santa’s Grottos” in the town centre at Rackhams from 11-4pm.  There is no charge, but donations are welcome to Altrincham Rotary.  Santa will then be popping up throughout the town and will be at Wilko on Saturday 23rd November, Treehouse on Saturday 30th November, House Restaurant & Bar in Goose Green on Saturday 7th December and Orangetheory Fitness on Saturday 14th December.

Altrincham’s businesses will also be sparkling from Saturday as they dress their windows for Christmas and to enter this year’s Festive Favourite Window Competition. Altrincham BID are excited to announce that this year’s competition will be judged by award-winning architects Stephen and Claire Hodder. There will also be a ‘People’s Choice’ competition hosted by Altrincham Today on Facebook so you can vote for your favourite by simply liking it.

Kate Gerbich, Events and Communications Manager for Altrincham BID said: “There’s always a fantastic atmosphere in Altrincham on the Christmas lights switch-on day and the event really marks the start of the festive season for the town!  We expect it will be very busy and would encourage visitors to use public transport or, if you’re able to, join one of the BID’s ‘Quietways’ walks from Bowdon Vale or Timperley.  Why not get here early to enjoy the town’s great selection of eateries and shops, and of course the performances throughout the afternoon on the Stamford Square Stage?”
